FERNBANK NEAR THE DUNDRUM TRAM STOP

This development is in Churchtown rather than Dundrum but it is very close to the Dundrum Tram Stop.

In 2006 Park Developments submitted a planning application to build a residential development in the grounds of Notre Dame school in Churchtown. At the time they had paid Euro 30 million for the site which had been owned by the Sisters of the Notre Dame de Missions. The nuns had planned to close the well known Notre Dame School which had operated from the site since the mid 1940s but in response to a parents protest they decided that the school would remain open but run by a trust.

However, late in 2016 it was announced that the school which has 230 pupils was to close because of ongoing financial difficulties. The junior school was due to close in June 2017, while the secondary school will continue operating until June 2019.

Fernbank House, a protected structure on the grounds, was retained and refurbished as a crèche. It is interesting to note that in the 1940s the nuns bought Fernbank, on Upper Churchtown Road near the original turn-off for Dundrum, from a Quaker family.
