THE MARCHING BANDS

The Artane Youth Band From: Dublin, Ireland. Director: Mr. Ronan O’Reilly The Artane Band has been in existence since 1872 and has played for many heads of state, in their long history. They have a unique and long standing relationship with the GAA and are a well known feature of all Ireland Sundays. 

Clondalkin Youth Band From: Dublin, Ireland Director: Mr. Vincent Dolan One of the largest marching and concert bands in Ireland, they have won many awards over the years. They have performed every year in the Dublin Parade since 1989. The band is under the expert guidance and baton of Mr. Vincent Dolan, a graduate of the College of Music, Dublin and a full-time member of the Irish Army School of Music.

St. Joseph’s Pipe Band From: Glasdrumman, Co Down Director: Miss Catherine Mallon St. Joseph’s Pipe Band, Glasdrumman, Co Down was formed in 1946 and celebrated their 70th anniversary last year. The band has played throughout Ireland and have travelled to the USA on three occasions.  They have performed in Boston and New York taking part in the St. Patrick Day parade on 5th Avenue. St. Joseph’s have been All Ireland Fleadh Cheoil Pipe Band title holders three times.

Westchester Firefighters Emerald Society From: New York, USA Director: Mr. Paul Jackman Westchester Firefighters Emerald Society is a fraternal organisation comprised of professional firefighters of Irish descent located in Westchester County, New York, USA. Organised in 1980, they celebrate, preserve and promote Irish culture and heritage within the Westchester professional fire services through fellowship and community service.

Bahamas All-Stars Marching Band From: Nassua, Bahamas Director: Mr. Yonell Justilien Bahamas All-Stars Marching Band was founded in 2011 with the aim of bringing together young Bahamians aged between 13-18. Under the direction of Mr. Yonell Justilien the band performs regularly in the Bahamas and in 2014 performed at the US Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York. This is the band’s first visit to Dublin.

DeKalb High School Marching Barbs From: Illnois, USA Director: Mr. Steve Lundin The Marching Barbs are so named as the town of DeKalb was the first home of industrial produced barb wire. They regularly perform at the Chicago Thanksgiving Parade and the Sycamore Pumpkin Festival Parade in Illnois. The Marching Barbs were placed first in the 2012 All-State Sugar Bowl in New Orleans. This is the Barb’s first visit to Ireland.

The Edgewood Marching Mustangs From: Indiana, USA Director: Mr. Aaron Wells The Edgewood Marching Mustangs are one of the many performing groups from Edgewood High School in Ellettsville, Indiana. They are twelve time State Marching Band Finalists and have been nominated as an Indiana All-State Music School for the last three years. In 2009 they received the youth band award in the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Dublin.

Fränkeschränzer Bubendorf From:  Bubendorf, Switzerland Director: Mr. Reto Tschudin This fraternal band are celebrating their 50th anniversary this year. They perform in the Swiss Championships of Carnevalmusic every year, in 2010 they won first place and in 2014 won loudest band. Every year they perform in a different costume with a different mask or larve. This is the band’s first visit to Ireland.

Illinois State University’s Big Red Marching Machine From: Illinois, USA Director: Dr. Gavin Smith The Big Red Marching Machine performed in the 2007 St Patrick’s Day parade. The Illinois State University’s bands were formed in 1932. They have performed all over the world including Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in 1998 and numerous Chicago Bears games. They have released dozens of musical recordings to wide critical acclaim.

Kadoudal Drum & Bugle Corps From:  Quiberon, France Director: Mr. Yvan Boscher Kadoudal Drum and Bugle Corps was established in 2008 by director Yvan Boscher and his brothers, former musicians at the Cavalry Band of the Republican Guard of Paris. They are a youth marching band comprising 25-30 musicians.  They perform in the junior cycle of the Drum Corps Europe Championships every year since 2010 and were vice champions in 2012.

Pacific Northwest Intercollegiate Marching Band From: Oregon and Washington, USA Director: Dr. Brad McDavid The Pacific Northwest Intercollegiate Marching Band is proud to be making its debut performance in Dublin. The band draws its membership from three of the largest universities from within the United States Pacific Northwest: The University of Oregon, University of Washington, and Washington State University. Under the direction of Dr. Brad McDavid, these marching bands provide a colorful blend of colour and musical variety.

Trommlerkorps “Gut Klang” 1919 Dortmund / Germany From: Dortmund, Germany Director: Mr. Friedhelm Koch A group of former miners came together in 1919 to form this drum-corps. In the band’s 98 years they have performed in the German-American Steuben-Parade in New York in 1984 and 1998, visited King Mswati III of Swaziland and have played at the Great Wall of China. Their repertoire includes March to Dublin and It’s a Long Way to Tipperary. They are delighted to be visiting Ireland for the first time.
